Partner
Sara Tomanio is a Partner in Coffey Modica’s New York City office where she focuses her practice on high exposure New York Labor Law, general and premises liability, construction defect, Director and Officer claims and medical malpractice matters.
Overview
Prior to arriving at Coffey Modica, Sara was at several well-known defense firms where she achieved successful outcomes in dispositive motions, mediations and as second chair at trials throughout New York State. She also achieved favorable results in the Southern District of New York Bankruptcy Court, wherein a stay was modified to allow access to insurance funds for her client.
Sara briefly practiced as counsel for Plaintiffs in medical malpractice litigation at a boutique firm and on the defense side at a large multi-national firm. The defense also included doctors in actions where they faced liability as a Director or Officer.
Finally, although originally a thoughtful sideline, Sara’s interest and advanced study in Intellectual Property provides her with the ability to consider claims in licensure agreements and dovetails with the defense of a Director or Officer for claims of theft of intellectual property, especially as related to medical devices.
Prior to practicing law Sara enjoyed a sixteen-year career as a Registered Nurse in New York and Connecticut. She practiced in a wide range of practice areas including the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Room. She also participated in a multidisciplinary practice group which assessed risk issues for a large medical center.
Although no longer in the hospital setting, she maintains all the required continuing education units and attends the American Association of Critical Care Nurses National Teaching Exposition each year. This dual career makes Sara uniquely qualified to evaluate, summarize and comment on complex medical records and opine on damages and thus eliminate or minimize risk in high exposure Labor Law and Wrongful Death actions.
In her spare time Sara enjoys teaching Residents, Nurses, Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians, Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Trauma Life Support, supporting trainers and therapists of a hockey team in the AHL and working with lawyers and other professionals obtain licensure after issues with substance abuse.
