Before joining Coffey Modica, Joelle was the associate director of healthcare standards, specializing in risk management, at the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation/Jacobi Medical Center. In this critical role, she actively supported the director of risk management and the chief medical officer in the risk management department at a Level I trauma center. Her responsibilities included reviewing incident and nursing reports for quality and compliance, liaising with senior leadership on serious incidents, conducting internal investigations, and spearheading quality assurance reviews. Additionally, Joelle was instrumental in drafting and revising policies, and providing medical-legal guidance to staff. Her expertise in navigating medical-legal issues and dedication to improving patient care and safety standards highlight her valuable role within the organization.

In a previous role, Joelle served as associate counsel at the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, Office of Legal Affairs, where she played a pivotal role in defending healthcare providers and facilities within the United States’ largest municipal healthcare system, against high-exposure medical malpractice lawsuits. Her exceptional skills in preparing medical witnesses for depositions and trials and adept deposition defense capabilities earned her recognition, and she was given the responsibility to train junior attorneys in deposition techniques. Joelle excelled in developing successful defense strategies, leading to lawsuit dismissals and reduced settlements through meticulous medical record reviews, legal research, and collaboration with healthcare providers.

Earlier in her career, Joelle was an associate attorney at Thomas M. Bona, PC, where she defended various general liability insurance claims related to labor law, premises liability, and motor vehicle accidents. She managed an independent caseload and was the primary liaison for a multibillion-dollar global retail client. There, she honed her skills in legal analysis, drafting pleadings, conducting depositions, and appeared in trial and appellate courts.
